Apple-like tartiness, with a sweet aroma and strong cup

bettadamalali estate

a third-generation, family-owned, and operated coffee estate in chickmagalur producing amongst india’s finest shade-grown, hand-picked, and sun-dried coffee. the estate, in addition to the many accolades it has received over time, is also a two-time winner of the illy coffee quality prize for espresso (3rd prize in 2007, and 1st prize in 2008).

the estate,

placed high in the hills and valleys of the western ghats in a region of chickamagalur known as kadagal nadu, the rich volcanic soil, pristine water, crisp air, and tending from the stewards of the land result in making the best quality coffee beans that we believe are second to none.

our altitude ranges from 800 m to 1350 m (2664 ft to 4495 ft). the arabica plants occupy elevations ranging from 1100 m to 1350 m, and robusta is mostly grown between 800m and 1100 m.

the coffee,

our coffee is one-hundred percent shade-grown under a mix of planted silver oak, and numerous other indigenous trees. the shade and the high altitude on our estate make the coffee bean mature slower than coffee grown in the lower altitudes, thus producing a well-rounded cup of coffee.

there are several varieties of arabica coffee grown on our estate. cultivars from the yesteryears like sln.795, sln.9, and sln. 5b occupies much of the area. other recently introduced varieties such as chandragiri, hemavathy, sachimore, cutwai are also being planted in newer blocks. all the robusta we have grown belongs to the sln. 274 variety.

the harvest,

every single coffee cherry is hand-picked on the estate. this method of harvesting guarantees that only the ripe, crimson-red cherries are picked from the plant, consequently ensuring a clean cup of coffee that is free from any off-taste produced as a result of picking green and unripe cherries. the harvest season begins by the end of november and progresses up to mid-march. arabica is harvested first followed by robusta.

bettadamalali mission,

to produce the finest coffee without compromising on the well-being of our workers or the environment.

quality, sustainability, and traceability being our focus, we ensure that our agronomic practices, and the inputs we use leave no residue in the environment, or the crops we grow, cause no harm to honey bees and other critters, and also are safe towards the people using them.

please note we sell 220 grams of green beans, the roasting service is free. after roasting the beans lose 12~20% of the mass. when you receive the beans from us, it will not be 220 grams. we will write the final weight of the roasted beans on the package. we also provide a video of the roast.

have a great cup!
